Plaits (make 2)

Using White yarn

Wrap yarn around your palm 24 times. (approximately). Cut off excess yarn.

Carefully, take yarn off of your hand.  Using a separate piece of white yarn, tie a knot through the top centre to secure all of the strands together.

Cut all the bottom strands, so you have what looks like a tassel.

Separate the strands evenly into 3 bunches.  Leave the separate yarn at the top (that you used to tie it together).

Plait together.

Tie securely at the bottom of the plait with pink yarn and make a bow.

Trim bottom loose strands neatly (and any strands that are sticking out of the plait).

Sew each plait onto the bottom edge of the hat.  (I started sewing the plaits 15sts clockwise and anticlockwise from where I fastened off the hat to get them evenly spaced out).

  1. This is enormous when using 4mm hook – i am now down to 3.25 and having to stuff the body as it is still too big. It looks on the photo like the orange fits snug – has anyone else made this with DK and 4mm hook.

    1. Hi Mary
I’m unsure why this is happening. I have used a 4mm on all of my choc orange gnomes in different brands of DK yarn and they have all turned out fine. Have you got a photo of your make so I can try to help with this.
      Kind regards

      1. Hi -I pulled it back. I have made 5 – need another 3. I have added some stuffing as still roomy. Using 3.25 and various DK – all needcstuffingbtgiugh

      2. Hi Mary

Without seeing a photo of your work I’m finding it difficult to help. I have however just tried the body part again and adjusted the amount of rows after the colour change to 3 instead of 4 to lower the height slightly.

Try that and see if it helps.

Let me know how you get on.

        Kind regards
